What Online Business Should I Do

Confusion depicted as a young man shrugging

The internet is a gateway to endless opportunities. I think we can all agree on that. I know that’s odd to say when we can’t seem to agree on left, right, right, or wrong these days.

Just thinking about the variety of online businesses you can start is mind-boggling. But here’s the thing—finding the right one for you isn’t just about what’s trending but what makes you tick.

An online business should satisfy and project your values and interests, which brings joy, excitement, and satisfaction.

You hear people say, “Do what you love.” And that might sound cliché, but there’s real power in it.

When your work is a labor of love, it’s not just a job; it becomes fun and fulfilling.

Figuring this out can lead to personal happiness and business success. When you love what you do, you’re more motivated, more creative, and simply better at it.

But why focus on happiness? Happiness motivates you. It fuels your drive to keep going, especially when challenges arise.

I always encounter challenges, but I fly through them and keep rockin’ because I love what I do.

Challenges are what life gives us to help us grow!

An online business built on personal passion is felt by customers, creating a more authentic connection. This connection changes the game in your favor in the super-competitive online marketplace.

Online business doesn’t have to be daunting. Understand what you want and find that sweet spot where your passions meet potential business opportunities.

“Sure thing, Dave, but how do I know what makes me happy?”

Please don’t despair, my friends, I can help.

Reflection and a List of Your Life’s Joys and Achievements

Taking a step back and listing out the moments that have brought you happiness or a sense of achievement can be incredibly insightful.

Have you ever considered how your past experiences shape who you are and where your strengths lie? This exercise is for discovering patterns and passions that will guide you in the right direction for your online business choice.

I’ll go first:

  1. The day I found out I won some books in elementary school. I felt like the luckiest kid ever.
  2. When I got my first dog. Aah, a companion just for me (he later got trashed by a pickup truck).
  3. Winning a scholarship when I didn’t even know what SATs were or why I had to take them. Hmm, ignorant, but kinda bright, I guess.
  4. I was elected captain of the CC team in high school. Was I a leader? Others saw me as such. Hmm.
  5. The many times I found the love of my life. What a Romeo I was. I’m alone now; who knew?
  6. I got my first 4.0 in college. See? I’m ignorant and a little bright. I didn’t finish college.

This is just the beginning of my list. It continues and includes the elation I felt when I started my first brick-and-mortar business. I knew I always wanted to be in business.

Enough about me! What about you?

Start by jotting down what has made you smile over the years. Was it organizing events for friends, crafting stories, or solving complex puzzles?

Each one of these moments highlights something special about you. They reveal your preferences, strengths, and even areas where you excel without trying too hard.

What about those times when you felt truly proud?

Maybe you received praise for a project or helped someone and felt a deep sense of fulfillment.

These moments aren’t random; they’re a window into your innate talents and what you truly enjoy doing.

A window peeking into the joyful inner desires of what a person wants to do with their life depicted by a person looking out of the window at their happy dreams.

They can guide you toward a business choice that feels less like work and more like a natural extension of your talents.

Analyze these insights further. Note any recurring themes or skills that stand out.

What you’re doing here is essentially mapping out your inner compass—a guide that can streamline the narrowing down which type of online business might suit you best.

Reflecting in this way turns your life’s highlights into a structured insight. It’s like lining up your interests and strengths and seeing where they intersect with potential business ideas.

It’s an exercise of personal discovery and a strategic step towards choosing an online business that fits like a glove.

I apologize for using the word “exercise.” You don’t have to do pushups or run three miles to complete this exercise.

And speaking of workouts…

Understanding Your Strengths and Weaknesses to Guide Business Choices

Knowing your strengths and weaknesses is essential to understanding what you bring to the table and where you might need support. This self-awareness can really help you make informed business decisions.

Start by looking at the list of what you’ve enjoyed and excelled at in the past. These moments highlight your strengths, the skills that come naturally, and those that make you stand out.

If you’ve always been good at communicating or have a knack for creativity, these are strengths to capitalize on.

On the flip side, understanding weaknesses is just as important. Maybe you struggled with numbers or found tech stuff a bit overwhelming.

Knowing these will help you choose a business without roadblocks, or you can plan to upskill or collaborate with others who complement these gaps.

I do business where collaboration can be the difference between moderate success and breakthrough business explosion.

A practical approach is to match your strengths to different business models. For instance, if you’re a natural storyteller, content creation like blogging or podcasting could be your thing.

Alternatively, if organizing and strategizing is your game, an e-commerce business could benefit from those strengths.

This insight empowers you to make choices that lead to long-term satisfaction and success.

Self-awareness reduces the chances of burnout and keeps you focused on what you’re genuinely good at.

With this understanding, you can choose what maximizes your abilities and sets you up for success.

Correlating Personal Strengths with Online Business Opportunities

If you haven’t made your list, please take the time to do it. It is vital to make this article work.

If you have made your list, CONGRATULATIONS! You can continue with confidence.

Now that you’ve got a clearer idea of your strengths and passions, it’s time to match them with the right online business models.

The goal is to find a business where your personal qualities naturally fit, creating a rewarding and sustainable experience.

Sustainability is key!!! Please take a look at my short list. What do you notice? That’s right. I didn’t finish what I started. I have no dog*, no degree, and no significant other. None of those pursuits sustained me except for one. I’m still in business!

Consider some popular online business avenues.

  1. E-commerce can suit detail-oriented planners who enjoy handling products and logistics.
  2. For those who love writing or creating visuals, blogging or YouTube channels offer a platform to share stories and expertise with a global audience.
  3. Digital marketing might be the right call if strategic planning and communication are your strong suits. It allows you to tap into a wide range of skills, from SEO to social media management, making it ideal if you enjoy juggling different tasks.
  4. If you like helping others and building communities, starting a coaching or consulting business might align with your strengths. It leverages communication skills and the ability to connect and guide others.

The idea is to blend what you love doing with viable market opportunities. When your strengths align with the demands of the business, you can thrive.

This alignment ensures you’re not only building a business but also a career that’s engaging and personally fulfilling.
